Ajaccio, Corsica, France

Many cities have urban fabric ripe for renewal. Ajaccio, the regional capital of Corsica, is no exception. Taking buildings from the 1960s and making them more energy efficient is one of the main challenges being tackled by this Concerto-Project. An added challenge is the renovation of buildings in Ajaccio's historic centre. Double-glazing with thermo-coating is being installed in fifty buildings in the protected city centre. These buildings are among 250 being re-glazed in this way.

An additional 565 apartments will be targeted for energy efficiency measures, and the CONCERTO project in Ajaccio is also constructing two High Environmental Quality new buildings, one with 15 apartments and one public service office building.

The CONCERTO approach

Ajaccio, the regional capital of Corsica and part of the cRRescendo project, is facing the challenges of renewing urban developments dating from the 1960’s, as well as renovating buildings in the historic centre.
The project is researching innovative methods to integrate solar water systems in the buildings in the centre of the capital.

Use of Renewable Energy Technologies

In Ajaccio poly-generation from heating and cooling in office buildings occurs, with specific innovations encompassing eco-renovation in the old, historic and protected city centre. The use of the locally patented solar ventilation systems and the use of the High Environmental Quality scheme for Ajaccio on the isle Corsica, further demonstrate means of achieving the community’s objectives. 2040 m² of domestic hot water for all apartments are produced from solar sources leading to a 20% saving on energy consumption. In addition to the 70 solar ventilation systems set up locally.

Low Carbon Technologies

In Ajaccio the construction of two High Environmental Quality new buildings, one with 15 apartments and one public service office building, helps achieve cRRescendo’s global goal of reducing energy demand and the installation of double-glazing with thermo-coating in 250 apartments shows clear results.

Research on innovative methods to integrate solar water systems in the buildings in the centre of Ajaccio ultimately contributes to the cRRescendo’ project global goals. Similarly, eco-buildings with integrated measures results in savings of up to 4,000 tonnes of CO2 per year in this community.
