DESCRIPTION of PROJECT

The sesac project’s full name is ‘Sustainable Energy Systems in Advanced Cities’. sesac demonstrates how a more sustainable local energy economy can be achieved through implementation of energy efficiency (EE) measures in new and refurbished buildings and increase in the use of renewable energy sources (RES) technology and systems for electricity supply, as well as for heating and cooling is being applied.

Tools for effective policymaking, implementation, monitoring and management of the sustainable energy processes are developed throughout the sesac project. Researchers will analyse and ensure the quality of the measures demonstrated, whilst city networks will make the results available to others interested in getting involved.

Example of USE of RES

As an example in the field of district heating all 396 new and 200 renovation dwellings are suited for the use of low temperature based district heating in the Delft community. All buildings in the Grenoble community will be supplied either by natural gas co-generation with solar thermal panels, or by district heating from bio-mass. Finally, in the Växjö community, all CONCERTO buildings will be supplied by district heating from bio-mass. Absorption cooling will be integrated in the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and district heating systems.

 FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

sesac research actions mainly support and follow up the demonstration activities in the project. There are also research activities which have a direct connection with the demonstrations of wastewater district heating and district cooling. The innovation related activities create knowledge by:

  • validation of promising, but not yet fully established technologies and solutions,
  • access and transfer of best practices for early use of new technologies and solutions,
  • development and analysis of energy systems and their technological and market/economic risk assessments,
  • early promotion and broad application of state-of-the-art technologies and solutions.
